Description

Chemistry course will provide you with a comprehensive theoretical and practical understanding of chemistry, and prepare you for a professional life in the ever-changing environment of 21st century chemistry. To achieve these goals, our course integrates the teaching of chemistry foundations with the application of chemistry principles and techniques using examples taken from the very broad range of chemical and biomedical research and practice at King’s.

Course starts with a coverage of the principles of physical, organic and inorganic chemistry, with additional maths to ensure you can successfully handle advanced physical and computational chemistry. Our course also incorporates an integrated laboratory course that brings together the different strands of chemistry and applies them to a range of chemical systems. In your final year, you will choose from a range of specialised modules in order to investigate particular aspects of the application of chemical principles to contemporary global and industrial challenges.

Pharmacology BSc will give you a sound understanding of the biological action of drugs and chemicals, the way they work at the molecular, cellular and systems levels and their use in medicines to treat disease. The course also features options to study abroad, or extend to a four- year MSci with Professional Placement Year.

Pharmacology is the science of drugs and how they act, including the search for new drugs, investigations into how they can best be used to treat disease, and their effects on the body. This exciting course will open up the potential for you to become one of tomorrow’s leading scientists, by allowing you to develop pure scientific rigour and skills, as well as the analytical ability, professional outlook and interpersonal intelligence required to succeed in a changing world. It is taught in our Faculty of Medicine. Scientists within the Faculty include the inventor of the world’s first ‘intelligent’ surgical knife, which can detect cancerous tissue with 100% accuracy, as well as experts at the forefront of HIV and malaria vaccine development, gene therapy and pandemic modelling.

This course combines the study of economics and econometrics with a wide range of optional units offered from across the school. Econometrics is the branch of statistics that economists use to verify or disprove theories and analyse the impact of policies and events on the future health of the economy.

It has been developed because, unlike physical sciences where controlled experiments are used to determine the effect of one thing on another, it is impossible to hold the economy constant while tinkering with a single variable. Econometrics provides the scientific means to overcome this issue using empirical observations. Econometrics will require you to use applied mathematical and statistical skills to analyse economic data.

This course offers a superb grounding in chemistry with the opportunity to specialise in your final year. The first two years are common to all of our degree courses. You will study fundamental concepts in inorganic, organic and physical chemistry, and applications in areas such as analytical, environmental, materials and theoretical chemistry.

You will also develop your ability to design experiments and interpret results, and gain key skills through our chemistry-specific communications and mathematics units. Our BSc course includes a final year project. This course provides a thorough grounding in the fundamentals of computer science combined with opportunities to specialise in application areas. Core ideas are introduced in years one and two. You will cover the principles of programming and algorithms, including:

• how a modern computer works;
• computational theory and how to design programming languages;
• concurrent systems and networks;
• machine learning and pattern recognition.

A key component of year two is the software group project in which you work in a team to deliver an application to a client with help from an industrial mentor. You can take options in human-computer interaction and complexity theory.
